Warriors: Into the Wild -
Erin Hunter (Fantasy)
Rusty is a ginger kitten who
dreams of running wild. That dream becomes a reality when he
strays from his yard and crosses into the woods. The woods
are divided amongst the clans of feral cats-- and Rusty
chooses to leave behind his life of comfort, to pursue his
dreams of becoming a great hunter and a mighty warrior. But
in addition to protecting Thunder Clan from the predations
of the sinister Shadow Clan, there is internal strife that
he must survive as well...
Into the Wild is a fun, fast
read, especially if you're looking for good animal fantasy,
or if you just like reading about cats. The characters are
interesting and believable, and the world and its feline
culture are well-constructed. The cast can be a little
overwhelming at times, trying to keep track of the visuals,
but there's a handy character guide at the front to let you
know who's what color, what their position is within the
clan, and so on. This is the first book in a six-part series
with additional spin-off series following it.

Murkmere
- Patricia Elliott (Fantasy)
Agnes is sent to Murkmere Hall
to be companion to the Master's impulsive daughter, Leah, in
this gothic alternate-universe fantasy, where avians are
worshipped and superstitions run deep. But not all is as it
seems, and Agnes is uncertain of who she can trust and who
is hiding secrets in this tangle of new relationships. Can
she survive her position, or will those who wish to use and
betray her manage to destroy her and take Murkmere for
themselves?
Murkmere does a good
job with its complicated character interrelationships---
alliances change frequently, and everyone has their secrets
which they wish to protect at all costs. The suspense,
intrigue, and mystery will leave readers wishing for more---
the book is such a fast read that it seems to come to its
inevitable conclusion all too quickly. |
