Fiction Friday!

book coverThis week’s Fiction Friday, The Adventures of Beanboy by Lisa Harkrader, is a quirky story that will appeal to kids who have dreams of drawing their own comic books.  In this story, twelve-year-old Tucker has a busy life.  His parents divorced several years ago, and he’s responsible for taking care of his younger brother while their mom works full time and goes to night school to earn her degree.  Factor in school, hanging out with friends and dodging bullies, and busy Tucker can barely find time to read his favorite comic books, much less create his own comic book.  However, when he discovers a contest

Fiction Friday!

book coverI’m so excited for this week’s Fiction Friday, and if you have a preschooler at home, you’ll be excited too!  Mo Willems has written another brilliant book titled, The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?  Like its predecessors in the pigeon series, this story finds the pigeon asking for yet another thing (this time it’s a cookie), and he grows angry when the duckling gets a cookie instead.  The pigeon then goes into a tantrum about how he has asked for so many things (to drive the bus, hot dog parties, and his own personal iceberg to name a few), but has never received any of them.  The pigeon conti

ABC Ready

abc blocksThis will be the last ABC Ready for awhile.  I’m going to take a break from this particular blog feature as I prepare for Summer Reading (which starts on May 29th!).  We have a lot of fun things planned for children of all ages this summer, so please stop by the library during the coming weeks to pick up our Summer Reading Calendar.  In the meantime, remember to read stories and sing rhymes with your little ones.

ABC Ready

abc blocksDid you know that it’s never too early to promote early literacy?  Babies may be a few years away from reading on their own, but it is still important for them to learn about books and reading.  Let your babies play with board books.  Teach them how to hold a book, and read to them as often as you can.  Rhymes and songs are also very important for this age group because it slows language down so that the babies can hear the individual sounds in words.  So be sure to sing some of your favorite songs to your babies and read nursery rhymes too!

Fiction Friday!

book coverYoung children who love penguins will enjoy the book that’s featured in this week’s Fiction Friday.  One Cool Friend, written by Toni Buzzeo, is a picture book about a young boy who visits the aquarium and brings a penguin home as a keepsake.  The boy’s father is oblivious to the fact that a penguin is living in his home, even as the boy turns the air conditioner on full blast and keeps the penguin in the freezer at night.  A surprise twist at the end is very amusing.

ABC Ready

abc blocksAs I’ve stated before, rhymes are immensely important when it comes to young children learning how to read.  When they know that the word ‘cat’ rhymes with ‘hat’ and ‘bat,’ then they’re more likely to recognize those words in print.  So this week’s ABC Ready is, once again, about practicing rhymes.  Recite your favorite nursery rhymes with your child.  Start a rhyme and see if your child can finish it.  Ask your child to think of words that rhyme with cat, hug, bed, etc.  And, at the end of the day, settle down with a picture book that’s told in rhyme.  Here’s a list of rhyming picture books that we have at the library.
